  • What should we do about the imbalance of the free and slave states?
  • Missouri should be a slave state!
  • Alabama has been added as a slave state! 
  • I, Henry Clay, Representative of Kentucky, hope you consider my proposal. 
  • 1818- The citizens of MIssouri sign petitions asking for admission into the Union as a slave state. These petitions were sent to Congress. 
  • Missouri Compromise                                            -Monroe
  • 1819- Alabama enters the Union as a slave state to balance the unevenness of the slave and free states. 
  • 1820- The representative of Kentucky; Henry Clay, proposed that Missouri became a slave state, and to even the balance, Maine would leave Massachusetts and become its own free state. 
  • I want slavery!

  • Pro Or Against Slavery? 
  • Slavery is cruel!
  • NO!
  • 1820- President Monroe signs the Missouri Compromise and the imaginary slave line is formed at the 36 degrees 30' North latitude. Maine becomes free 10 days later.  
  • 1850- The Mexican-American War leads to additional land in the U.S. The Union struggles to decide which states to make free so Henry Clay proposes that the Fugitive Slave Act and Washington DC's slave trade be abolished.  
  • 1854- Kansas- Nebraska Act: This act allowed Kansas and Nebraskan citizens to choose whether or not they want slaves in their state. It also opposed the Missouri Compromise which prohibited slavery North of the imaginary slave line.
