  • Setting
  • Imagery The author uses a lot of imagery throughout the book. He makes it very detailed and descriptive
  • "...five feet away from me, her lips chapped to cracking, makeup-less, dirt in her finger nails, her eyes silent" (281).
  • Flashback The author doesn't use to much flashbacks in the story. But, there was one flashback the Quinten will never forget.
  • "May i have this dance' and the girl would say, ' you may... Chuck convinced every single girl to say no to me" (61).
  • "Maybe all the strings inside him broke" (prologue, 32).
  • Symbolism Nine year old Margo wonders why the man in the park killed himself, she thinks maybe all the strings inside him broke. She brings it back up later in the book says that a paper girl needs at least one string.
  • "Every paper girl needs atleast one string, right?"(300).
  • "You have been a paper boy to me all these years-two dimensions as a character on the page and two diffrent, but still flat...a paper town for a paper girl"(292,393)
  • Theme If you ever played with paper dolls you know how easy it is to change a person's identity. Sometimes it's as easy as just changing an outfit. Margo refers to people she finds flat and boring as paper boys or paper girls. But when she realizes that she's a paper girl, too, she tries to find a way to give herself a third dimension.
  • Quentin Jacobson is the narrator and protananist, he's a good student about to graduate high school. He lives a relatively uneventful, and he's obsessed with his next-door neighbor, Margo Roth Spiegelman, and she is decidedly not normal.
  • Characterization
  • Margo Roth Spiegelman is the girl who loves mysteries so much that she became one , and while in school, she seems intent to be the manic pixie dream girlest of them all.
