Mrs.Mallard was crying because she just found out her husband died from a train crash. She was sobbing in her room for 30 minutes.
"I'm finally free"she said with joy .
She kept on whispering under her breath, until she realized what she said, "free".
*shocked to see her husband still alive*
She said she was free a little louder. But this time with joy.
She said she was finally free from her husband. I mean she only loved him sometimes, not all the time.
But then she realized her husband was still alive and died form sadness. But the doctors thought she died of happiness, "the joy that kills".
The theme of this is that, women back then must've been sad because she couldn't marry the one she loved. She felt no love to the person she is married with. She always felt like she was control by someone.
