Storyboard Description

"A Rose For Emily" is a short story that starts with the funeral of Miss Emily, but uses a series of flashbacks to give background to the story. The story takes place in the small, nosy town of Jefferson in the 1800s. Since the town is so small and close knit, everyone is in each other's business and gossip goes around fast. So the town gossips about Miss Emily and all of her strange habits. Miss Emily represents the old south because of her resistance to change and to accept the changes going on around her. She also represents the old south because of the way her father always pushed old southern values on her and said no man would ever be good enough for her, so she convinced herself just that. The theme of this story is isolation and its effects. Miss Emily was isolated from the world by her father. The effects were her never being able to be free and when she was, she couldn't accept it. So she continued to stay in isolation because that was the only way she knew how to live.
