Waverly Jong lived a challenging life. She started out playing chess at a young age. She became very talented and won many tournaments. Her mother began taking all the credit for her success and showing Waverly off to everyone. Waverly had enough and had a big argument with her mom. This is when the learned the art of invisible strength, something she will remember forever. When she got older she brought her high school sweetheart, who she had been dating for a long time, to meet her mother. Lindo pointed out all of his flaws and Waverly eventually divorced him. Then she brought her new boyfriend Rich to meet her mother. Although Waverly though he said all the wrong things, Lindo approved of him.
Can I play?
After her brother gets a chess set, she watches him play. She wants to play with him, but he won't let her. After begging, and begging she finally lets her play, in trade for a life saver.
"He likes to tell big jokes and make other people feel little."(Tan 174)
Waverly starts to become very talented at chess. She tries very hard and in turn, she wins lots of tournaments.
As she won more and more tournaments her mother began to brag about her winnings. Her and her mother got into a fight and it was there that she learned the art of invisible strength.
I approve of Rich.
Marvin and Waverly have been together since high school, and she takes him to meet Lindo for the first time. It didn't go well, she pointed out all his flaws. Soon Waverly saw these flaws too and divorced him.
Waverly is scared that Lindo won't approve of Rich, the same way she didn't approve of Marvin.
Surprisingly her mother approves of Rich, even though she though he said all the wrong things in front of her.
