The narrator is the brother of Doodle who is a boy who has a physical disability and their family expected Doodle to die when he was first born.
Since the brother doesn't truly like the idea of his brother not being able to have adventures with him and because he's embarrassed of having a crippled brother, he tries to teach Doodle to run, walk, swim, climb, and box which Doodle fails to learn before the beginning of school
One late afternoon, Doodle saw a scarlet ibis on top of a tree and the ibis could not coordinate his wings so he fell and broke his neck and died as he crashed down on the floor but what they didn't know, was that it was slowly leading to another horrible fate
While being outside in the woods, it started to rain hard and the brother left Doodle all alone there so when the brother came back, he found Doodle dead with his neck broken just like the Scarlet Ibis
In a moment of grief, the brother gets over him and protects him from the rest of the mocking rain.
"Pride is a wonderful terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death". The brother had lost one of the most precious things in his life and he didn't appreciate him enough when was actually truly there.
