  • The chief elder is apologizing to the community for causing them stress. Everyone was worried and curious why she skipped Jonas. She didn't mean to worry them like that so wanted them to know she was sorry before she made her big announcement. 
  • "I apologise to my community...Jonas...I apologise to you in particular"(Lowry 75)
  • Ceremony of Twelve
  • The chief elder explains that Jonas was not assigned but he was selected to be the receiver of memory. Everyone one is shocked because it is such a important job and privilege that is not usually given out.
  • "Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memory"(Lowry 76)
  • Ceremony of Twelve
  • For the first time ever Jonas notices a bearded man with pale eyes just like him. He is another elder who is the current receiver of memory. Jonas can't get over the fact that the have similar features and the same job.  Maybe those eyes allow them to see beyond
  • Ceremony of Twelve
  • "It was a man [I] had never noticed before, a bearded man with pale eyes"(Lowry 76)
  • The chief elder goes through all the qualities that a receiver must have. They must have intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom and capacity to see beyond. The elder explains all of the qualities except for the capacity to see beyond because nobody has real words for it.
  • "He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have"(Lowry 78)
  • Ceremony of Twelve
  • When Jonsa is on stage and the elder is talking about seeing beyond he looks out and the audience changes. He doesn't really know how or why they change but the same thing that happened to the apple happens to the people. 
  • Ceremony of Twelve
  • When [I] looked out across the crowed, the sea of faces, the thing happened again. The thing that had happened with the apple. They changed" (Lowry 80)
  • When leaving the stage the audience chants his name over and over until he leaves. Jonas believes that the chant is the communitiee tellig Jonas they accept him and the new role he was giving. 
  • Jonas! Jonas!
  • Jonas! Jonas!
