  • "You can just tell, Scout"
  • Everyone eats a big picnic lunch outside the courthouse. The white people sit on one side of the lawn and the black people sit on the other. Mr. Dolphus Raymond sits with the black people because he lives with them
  •
  • "Let me tell you what happened"
  • Jem tells Scout that kids who are half black, half white are called "mulatto". Scout asks Jem how he can tell that someone is mulatto
  • "Come help!"
  • Scout, Jem and Dill sneak into the courtroom after everyone else so Atticus won't see them. There are no seats, so Reverend Sykes lets them sit in the balcony with the black people to watch the trial.
  • "Tom Robinson did this."
  • The first person to testify is Heck Tate, the sheriff. Mr. Gilmer, Bob Ewell's lawyer, asks him to tell what happened.
  • That night, Bob Ewell had come to Heck Tate's office and told him that Tom Robinson had raped his daughter Mayella.
  • Heck Tate went with Bob Ewell to his house. Mayella was there and told Heck Tate the same story. She had lots of bruises. No one called the doctor.
