  • Causes of the Cold War By Marissa Sanna
  • The Cold War began in 1947. It wasn't a physical war; it consisted of America and the Soviet Union threatening each other.
  • The Soviets forced several Eastern European countries into communism. America was worried about the spread of communism into western countries.
  • The USSR, on the other hand, feared America's use of atomic weapons. The threat was ever-present.
  • The fear of communism spread to the citizens of the United States, too. People embarked on witch hunts for American communists.
  • The Cold War lasted over forty years. It only ended when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
