  • Hamartia; He hates hypocrites but he has committed a sin. The sin of adultery with Abigail. He feels guilty about his sin and his behavior.
  • Why? Just why? I feel so guilty for having an affair with Abigail. Ashamed of myself!
  • John Proctor as Tragic Hero
  • Hubris: His feeling of hypocrisy keeps him away from accusing other people. John hesitates to go to court to testify witchcraft against Abigail.
  • Anagnorisis; John Proctors wife, Elizabeth, charged with witchcraft! Abigail accuses her. John finds out Abigail's true color. He realizes that she wants his wife DEAD.
  • YES! I got what I wanted. She's taken away from my John.
  • Peripeteia; To save his friends, he admitted to having an affair with Abigail ..... It backfires. John is accused of witchcraft.
  • She's a TRAMP! Yes I admit I committed adultery with her.
  • Is that right? well Proctor you are also accused of WITCHCRAFT!
  • Nemesis: John is thinking about confessing to witchcraft to save his own life, but he can't go with it because he would be giving up his good name and selling out his friends. He tore the paper into pieces!
  • It is my name!
  • He signed the paper! He shall not be hung!
  • Catharsis; John is killed as a witch, but he finally sees himself as a good man again. The townspeople are upset because they're realizing that the good people are being killed. Their deaths about the end of the witch hunts.
