Storyboard Text

  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • You will stay with me for three days in quarantine. Afterward, you will go to work. Tomorrow: medical checkup.
  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • Are you in good health? Open wide!
  • He's not looking for decaying teeth, he's looking for my gold tooth!
  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • Juliek, Polish-Jewish violinist in the camp orchestra
  • We work in a warehouse of electrical materials, not far from here. The work is neither difficult nor dangerous. Only Idek, the Kapo, occasionally has fits of madness, and then you'd better stay out of his way.
  • Left, right, left, right. Fall in!
  • After arriving in Buna, they were shuffled into the showers and then a tent. Other prisoners reassured Elie and his father that compared to other camps, Buna was tolerable. Elie was mostly worried about being separated from his father and begged to be given the same job as him.
  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • During the medical checkup, prisoners were examined by three different doctors. Elie's gold tooth proved to be valuable to the dentist, which meant his number was written down for it to be extracted later.
  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • All right, son. Come back to see me when you feel better.
  • After the Kapo picked out the prisoners he wanted (like cattle), he walked them through the musicians camp. Here is where he met Juliek and learned about the work he would do.
  • Ch. 4 - At Buna
  • Years later in Paris...
  • I do remember!
  • Their job was to sit and count various electrical materials. The foreman, Franek, placed in charge of them, was kind enough to allow Elie and his father to work side by side. He also met two boys from Czechoslovakia, Yossi and Tibi, and they became close friends who talked about leaving Europe after the war was over.
  • One day Elie was summoned to the dentist to have his gold crown removed. He lied and said he wasn't feeling well, which gave him some time away from the dentist. A few days after his visit, the office was shut down and he got to keep his gold tooth! This was important as he could use it to buy food in the future.
  • Couldn't you wait a few days, sir? I don't feel well, I have a fever...
  • In the warehouse, Elie worked next to a French woman. One day, Idek was full of rage and started beating Elie for no reason. When he was done, the French woman helped him clean up and gave him a piece of her bread. He ended up seeing her again accidentally many years later after the war!
  • Keep your anger, your hate, for another day...
