When Nadine was 9 In 1939 France declared war on Germany and that's when Nadine’s life started to change.

Nadine’s family moved to Saint-Marc-sur-Mer, a small village, where they looked for safety. There, Nadine continued to go to school and carry on with her life. But her grandmother did not make it into the city.
In June 1940, the Nazi troops reached Saint-Marc-sur-Mer and France surrendered to Germany.
Nadine and her mother moved to the nearby city, Nantes, hoping it would be safe there.
In 1942 (when Nadine was 11, Nadine and her mother were caught and arrested by the French Police.
Nadine Schatz was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp and was gassed shortly after arriving on September 23, 1942 when she was only 12 years old.
Nadine and her mother were separated and Nadine was sent to the Drancy transit camp east of Paris.
