Storyboard Text

  • Close up of drug abuse victim, plain background, dark mood, giving speech. "They told me drugs would help me relieve stress"
  • Cuts to this scene. He storms down the street, hiding his face under his hood, with an unstable mood. Bumps into walking pedestrian, who is using his phone while walking.
  • Drug abuser unleashes emotion upon pedestrian and they start to argue. Slight violence coming from the drug abuser, in forms of pushing, as well as verbal abuse, however, this is not heard by the audience (no dialogue).
  • Dark mood and lighting has negative connotation, foreshadowing bad events. Black background symbolizes death, sorrow and regret. Close up shows the victim's feelings, towards drug abuse and how he feels about the consequences of his actions.
  • Family witnesses argument, attempts to call emergency services. Conflict goes on while concerned father and terrified child watch. No dialogue.
  • This frame introduces the audience to the consequences of drug abuse, in the form of unstable moods and emotions after use. Speed of texting sound of walking pedestrian (ticking) will gradually increase, symbolizing the condition of the drug abuser's emotions and how his irritation is increasing.
  • Drug abuser glances at family, notices them calling the police. Raises his concerns about possibly being arrested. Close up of gun being taken out of pocket and trigger pulled. Drug abuser shoots son, father is devastated.
  • Slight hyperbole applies, as rage outbursts are certainly plausible and common with drug abusers, however, the extend of the conflict in terms of extreme verbal abuse and slight violence is slightly exaggerated.
  • Close up of face of drug abuser filled with regret. "They lied / They didn't help" . Screen turns black, showing a single statistic, showing the number of crimes connected to drug abuse. After this, a contact address is displayed ("To learn the truth about drugs, go to www.drugabusewebsiteexample.com").
  • Family displays pathos as in showing how other people view drug abuse victims and how it can affect them. Shows how people are afraid of drug abusers and that there is a negative connotation with drug abuse. Sets up emotional climax.
  • Drug abuse leads to impulsive thinking and unpredictable behavior, therefore leading to the drug abuser shooting the son without intending to. After seeing the expression of the devastated father, which can be classified as pathos as audience is able to see how drug abuse can ruin other people's lives and cause negative emotions, drug abuser feels guilt and regret. The shooting, which can be considered as an exaggeration of effects of drug abuse, also creates a sense of fear in the target audience, persuading them not to abuse drugs
  • Pathos is used through the face of regret of the drug abuser, persuading audience to not use drugs, or they will feel as negatively as the person displayed. Logos used through the display of the statistic, however, this also supports pathos through the use of the rhetorical device amplification, to further strengthen the argument, that drug abuse has negative consequences in relation to crime. Events shown in the PSA are contradictory to the initial statement about drugs being useful for stress relief, further making it persuasive.
