The year "the war began." The narrater is a 5th grade student who lives opposite an airport near Boston. This is where her imaginative mind dreams of flying and makes up adventures about superman, who looks like her Uncle Franks, and who always save days.
The narrater is invited to Paula Brown's birthday party. At the movies after the party, she sees a war film in which the Japanese soldiers torture prisoners of war. She is so traumatized that she is sick.
Paula brown invites the narrater to play a game of tag to make up the numbers. During the game, Paula slips on a oil slick and her new snowsuit is ruined.
Come play with us
Paula blames the innocent narrator and other children team up against her. The narrater becomes an outsider.
Yeah! You did it!
You did it!
She comes home where neither her mom nor Uncle Frank truly believes in her innocence and decides to buy a new snowsuit.
Tell us what really happened
That day the narrater feels completely alone. There is no superman to save the day, no dreams if flying to lift her mood. Her child hood innocence fade away. That day she realizes that world is a harsh place that is not fair.
