  • Today we will be learning about one of the trends on the periodic table.  The size of atoms!

  • Trends on the size of atoms on the periodic table
  • As you go across the periodic table, atoms get smaller, and if you go down the table, atoms get bigger
  • Louis, kill yourself
  • Why is that?
  • woah, woah, woah Mrs. Sorensen. Let's be civil

  • Mrs. Sorensen, is that a threat?
  • Trends on the size of atoms on the periodic table
  • Listen up
  • As you go across the periodic table, the amount of electrons and protons increase while the amount of energy levels stays the same. This causes a stronger attraction between the negative electrons and the positive nucleus, causing the nucleus to pull the electrons in closer, resulting in the atom being smaller
  • Trends on the size of atoms on the periodic table
  • As you go down the periodic table, new energy levels are added. Despite that more protons and electrons are being added, the more energy levels result in more electron shielding. The more protons/electrons and more energy levels cancel each other out. There is a greater distance between the valence electrons and the nucleus which results in a smaller force of attraction. Therefore, the atom is bigger.
