Storyboard Text

  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • Schemas are something that all people possess and continue to form and change throughout life.
  • Object schemas, like this one, are just one type of schema that focus on what an inanimate object is and how it works.
  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • A schema describes both the mental and physical actions involved in understanding and knowing.
  •  Schemas are categories of knowledge that help us to interpret and understand the world.
  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • In Piaget’s view, a schema includes both a category of knowledge and the process of obtaining that knowledge.
  •  As experiences happen, this new information is used to modify, add to, or change previously existing schemas.
  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • Going back to our example, Eli had a schema about a type of animal, a horse.
  • His sole experience had been with horses, so he believed that all animals that were big, had a tail and 4 legs were horses.
  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • But then, Eli encountered a cow, which also is big, has 4 legs and a tail. Eli now took in this new information, modifying the previously existing schema to include this new information.
  • Jean Piaget " Schema"
  • Now Eli knows what a cow is and you know what a Schema is!
