Storyboard Text

  • For example, the media says that around 40000 people were shot last year, making it seem like there were 40000 homicides, but actually, 60% of those people committed suicide
  • The media tends to use exaggerated or unclear statistics to make gun violence seem worse
  • There is a statistic commonly used by the media saying that 2.5 million people use their guns for self-defense per year, though it is way off
  • That result was gotten by the extrapolation of a small survey. A more reliable survey was conducted and found the real number is only around 60-100 thousand times per year
  • Last but not least, the media mostly covers school/mass shootings to show how bad guns are, and although they are tragic, they only make up a fraction of gun deaths
  • Last year in the U.S., the number of deaths caused by mass shootings was in the low hundreds, which is very little compared to the 40000 other gun caused deaths.
  • To conclude, while guns have their positives, which are rarely shown by the media, they are heavily outweighed by their negatives
