A Summary of "How Wildfires Work"
By Mattias Kehler
Fires require what is called the fire triangle, which is heat, fuel, and oxygen. Without one of these elements, the fire cannot succeed.
With all three of these elements, however, wildfires can be one of the most destructive disasters on earth. An average of 5 million acres burn every year in the U.S.
Believe it or not, the majority of wildfires are human caused.
After a fire has been started, there are three elements that determine how it spreads: fuel, weather, and topography. Similar to the fire triangle, all three elements together can be disastrous.
With enough surrounding fuel, the fire can spread quickly and intensely. The heat dries the surrounding brush, causing the fire to spread even more.
