Ralph de Gael-Earl of east anglia, Roger de Bretuil- Earl of Hereford and Waltheof- Earl of Northumbria made a plan together to overthrow william and split the kingdom into 3 parts.
With William away in Normandy, Archbishop Lanfranc was left in control of England.
Waltheof changed his mind about the rebellion and told the archbishop about the plan to rebel.
Lanfranc sent troops to block the earls from leaving their earldoms to prevent the uprising before it properly began.
Earl Ralph made a deal with cnut and the danes. The danes arrived with 200 ships but king William was already back to England so cnut decided not to fight and sailed up to york, looted and then went back home.
The revolt had been avoided but it now meant William had to be careful of who he trusted and would have to keep a closer eye on his own earls.
