  • The ngai tribe lived in the forest
  • In the early 1800's the Ngati papa tribe moved into the Hauriki Golf.  
  • From 1600 to 1750 the Tamaki tribe tribes teracced the volcanic cones, building pa (settlements behind protective palisades).  Across the ithumus they developed 2000 hectares of kumara gardens.  
  • In 1821, wanting to avenge previous defeats by Tamaki tribes, the Ngapuhi leader Honi Hika launched a series or attacks on the region.  
  • The costal area of Auckland was a smorgesbord for early Maori.  
  • Between the 1600s and 1820s the population drastically rose.
