The ngai tribe lived in the forest
In the early 1800's the Ngati papa tribe moved into the Hauriki Golf.
From 1600 to 1750 the Tamaki tribe tribes teracced the volcanic cones, building pa (settlements behind protective palisades). Across the ithumus they developed 2000 hectares of kumara gardens.
In 1821, wanting to avenge previous defeats by Tamaki tribes, the Ngapuhi leader Honi Hika launched a series or attacks on the region.
The costal area of Auckland was a smorgesbord for early Maori.
Between the 1600s and 1820s the population drastically rose.
