Maximus was born into a wealthy Roman family where he eventually rose through the ranks up to a general of the Roman army. He was a decorated general and lived in a beautiful home with his son and wife.
After a successful conquest and war against the Germanic tribes, Marcus Aurelius, the emperor of Rome, Granted Maximus the title of Emperor as Marcus was growing old. After much consideration, Maximus reluctantly accepts. However, only the emperor hears him say this. When the emperor tells his son, Commodus, he murders him in cold blood out of frustration. This makes him the emperor of Rome. His first order as Rome is to capture and kill Maximus.
Maximus narrowly escapes death and has to run away from Germania, all the way past Rome where his family was killed. He eventually has an epiphany where he loses consciousness. When he awakens, he is in a desert town with a Gladiator ring. He is then faced with the decision to either go into slavery or fight.
Maximus along with his two friends rise up the ranks of gladiators. They help guide him through his trial and tribulations along with his talisman of a soldier.
After rising up as a gladiator all the to Rome. Emperor Commodus finds out about Maximus' new identity as a gladiator and decides to have him killed. However, because of his popularity as a a gladiator, Commodus decides to face him in the coliseum one on one. After a fierce battle, Maximus comes out victorious.
After a long, arduous journey, Maximus returns home with his glory restored.
