Storyboard Description

Three Scenarios for Effective Feedback.

Storyboard Text

  • Scenario 1 : Praise for behaviour
  • Ryousuke, I think you are doing a great job of controlling your feelings by breathing and coming to speak to me before acting.
  • Mr.Locker is helping me to understand that I can control myself. I feel good about that.
  • Scenario 2 : Praise for academic success.
  • Research has clearly demonstrated that having the mindset that you are either smart or not smart has serious negative consequences for learning.
  • Sara, please take notes. Well done, in your book report you have written full, complex sentences. To improve your work you could write more about the main idea, story arc and the characters in the story.
  • I did a good job, but I can do even better? Cool!
  • Scenario 3 : Praise for academic encouragement.
  • So working hard is what Mr.Smith values? It`s OK to make mistakes because we can correct them? Great!
  • You both clearly worked hard on your work this week. In your history essays, I see 6 spelling mistakes, I see two date errors. In your math assignments, I see three problems that are not correct. Work together to find the mistakes.
  • A student with anger issues - largely due to academic frustration - has been using anger management techniques, practiced with the school counsellor.
  • Teacher conferences; the students write. Feedback Note-taking - If the one who does the work is doing the learning, should not the student be the one writing down the feedback?
  • "Comment rather than correct" - Carol Jago reminds us that it's the students job to correct their errors. In fact, it would be even more powerful for them to identify the errors in the first place using hints provided by the teacher.
