The Cather in the Rye is a book about Holden Caulfield's days after being kicked out of Pencey Prep. After he gets expelled, he goes to New York to go explore while his parents think he's still at school and meets very interesting people, and goes to see his sister Phoebe.

Identity crisis is a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a persons sense of identity becomes insecure
Holden was confused on what he wanted and backed out of the situation because he wasn't ready to fully commit
By the end of the story Holden still hasn't figured out whether or not he wants to go to school and be productive
