After Matt is rescued from Rosa's never ending torture, he is introduced to El Patron. The man speaks with Matt in a subtle but pleasant tone, and rambles about his own youth as the three dine on delicious food.
El Patron provides Celia and Matt their own private section at the Alacran mansion. Matt is even given his own teacher, and bodyguard named Tam Lin. However, the teacher seems to do the same instruction day after day. This drives Matt insane, resulting in him crying and creating a huge scene. Tam Lin escorts her out, and calls her an eejit. He decides to take Matt on a trip.
When Matt goes with Tam Lin on a journey to the mountains, he notices something odd on the fields. As he makes Tam Lin halt the horse, he sees a dead laborer on the ground. It's described as "dried up," and is dubbed an eejit by Tam Lin. Matt finds out the true meaning of an eejit: a person with a computer chip in their brain, being forced to do what they're asked.
El Patron is now 143 years old. During his birthday party, important people such as celebrities, politicians, presidents, etc. attend. Though it was a celebration for El Patron, it turned into a celebration for Matt as well. During the party, El Patron tells Matt about a story that even thought there were eight brothers/sisters, he was the only one to make it to adulthood. He then talks about outliving all of his enemies.
Matt gets overwhelmed by this sense of power he has been given by El Patron, that he commands Maria to give him a kiss. Maria cries, but does as she is told.
Ever since Maria didn't want to talk to him after what he made her do at the party, Matt is ignored by her. In order to get her attention, he decides to kidnap her beloved dog Furball. He leaves a note saying "if you want to see your dog again, come to the Lotus Pond.
