  • Hey Antonio, can I borrow some money?
  • Bassanio
  • Antonio
  • Portia
  • Whatever.
  • I'll give you a loan under these conditions...
  • Shylock
  • I need some help.
  • O.K.
  • Portia
  • One day a man named Bassanio saw a beautiful lady named Portia. He immediately fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. He wanted to buy new clothes and more to seem rich so that she would like him. The problem was, he didn't have any money, so he went to his best friend Antonio for a loan.
  • Stop!
  • Antonio had spent all of his money on merchant ships that were across the occean, so they had to go to Antonio's enemy banker, Shylock, for a loan. Shylock said that if he didn't get his money back in three months, he would get to cut off a pound of Antonio's flesh. Antonio wasn't worried because his ships should be back in Venice before three months.
  • I'll let you go if you do these things...
  • Bassanio proceeded to go to Belmont to take something called a Casket Test. There were three caskets: Gold, Silver, and lead. Portia's picture was in one of them. Two other suitors failed to pick the correct casket. Bassanio chose the lead casket, which happened to be the correct one! This meant that now Portia and Bassanio were engaged. The problem was, all of Antonio's ships had crashed, so he couldn't pay back the bond in time. Now he was in jail. Bassanio needed Portia's money to pay Shylock so that Antonio could be saved.
  • Portia went to Antonio's trial dressed as a male lawyer to see Basanio and try and save Antonio. Antonio signed a legal agreement to give Shylock a pound of his flesh, so it would hurt Venice's trade and business if the judge didn't let Shylock take a pound of Antonio's flesh. Three times the money due was offered to Shylock, but he didn't want it. He wanted to kill Antonio. Antonio agreed, depressingly. Just as Shylock was about to cut into Antonio, Portia found a loophole.
  • Portia (In disguise)
  • The agreemant between Shylock and Antonio said that Shylock could have a pound of Antonio's flesh, but it didn't say anything about Shylock getting any of Antonio's blood. If a drop of Antonio's blood was spilt, Shylock would lose all of his possesions and even face death. he tried to murder Antonio and the penalty for attempted murder could put Shylock's life at stake. Antonio showed him mercy and made him give half of his money to Lorenzo, the rest of his money to Lorenzo when he dies, and become Christian
  • In the end, Bassanio was married to Portia, Antonio kept his flesh, and surprisingly, three of the five merchant ships that Antonio departed came back to port safely.
