  • In the story, the the flashback began with her sitting on the woodpile. During this time, she is reflecting on her decision about the sorority. She later comes back on the wood pile.
  • Symbol
  • "Outside , the sparrows were still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, exactly the same." (plath 9)
  • This metaphor is exposing what she feels like. She is feeling weak and bare.
  • The theme of this story is individually. In the story, she realizes that it feels better to be true to yourself than others.
  • A symbol in this story are the birds. The heather bird represents freedom for Millicent. The sparrow represents being all of the same.
