Montressor and Fortunato see each other during the carnival season in Italy. Montressor explains he has a cask of Amontillado and wants to check it's authenticity and asks if Fortunato could help. However, Montressor reveals to the reader what he really plans to do to Fortunato.
As Fortunato is led into the catacomb the mold on the walls begins to make him cough. Montressor insists again that he can have someone else test the liquor but Fortunato is persistent.
Montressor leads him deeper into the catacombs all while Fortunato coughs and resists leaving a couple more times. At the end of the catacombs they find an empty chamber.
When Fortunato reaches the end of the chamber Montressor chains him against the wall and begins creating a wall to close the chamber.
As Montressor is constructing the wall Fortunato is pleading for his life. Montressor responds to this by mocking his pleads.
As Montressor finishes he realizes he can no longer hear Fortunato and says Rest In Peace.
