When Dax came out to his parents his junior year of high school, his parents were not ready to accept the fact their son had a "mental illness". They forced him into nursing when he wanted to be an automobile engineer; saying that a nurse's uniform was the only thing that would look good on him.
Dax served as a nurse for nine months; from June 1966-March 1967. He had joined as a serviceman because his boyfriend Jack had been a drafted soldier at the war and he hoped that serving as a nurse would increase of seeing his partner when he came for checkups.
Right before Jack left for war, he had given Dax a watch and he had stopped the time on it. He said he it would remind Dax of the time they had last seen each other; 12:15. He has also promised to change the time each time met afterward but that had never happened.
Jack had died the third week he was at war, at the age of 21, which explained why all of Dax's letters had gone unresponded. He was shot on the left leg three times and once near his pelvis.
When Dax had found out 9 months later, severe panic attacks due to the unbearable shock had left him diagnosed with PTSD
Dax was sent back to his hometown in Arizona where he lived with his aunt since his parents refused to accept him. His condition only worsened and later that year, he had killed himself. He died at the age of 25
