The narrator is introduced and he wishes to prove his sanity to the reader, despite having killed a man over a "vulture" eye.
During each night for a week the narrator sneaks into the man's room, wait for the when his "vulture" eye to open so he can kill him just at the right moment.
On one of the nights during the week the narrator accidentally woke the old man from his sleep, but because he was so afraid he ended up dying from a heart attack.
But before the old man died he had let out a loud screech. Loud enough for a neighbour to hear. He then knew that police might show up soon so he hid the corpse by smothering it under a mattress.
Soon enough three police men arrived, but the narrator was cool. He let the police men in with pleasure, and he even let them stay a bit while they chatted. But the narrator was starting to hallucinate, as he started to hear the sound of the old mans beating heart coming back to haunt him.
And soon enough the narrator gave in. The horrid sound of the beating heart was just as disturbing as the vulture eye so he told the police men the truth.
