"I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill" (Salinger 4).
Holden is a 16 year old boy living in New York. He attends Pency Prep his third school where he is failing all of his classes. His brother, Allie is dead, while his siter Pheobe is still alive.
Holden meets these three girls at a bar and talks with them. Then eventually dances with one. He wants to talk with them and all, but when he gets his bill he turns into a phony.
"They were so ignorant, and they those sad fancy hat on and all" (Salinger 84).
“I certainly felt peculiar when she did that. I know you're supposed to feel pretty sexy when somebody gets up and pulls their dress over their head, but I didnt. Sexy was about the last thing I was feeling. I felt much more depressed than sexy" (Salinger 106).
Holden calls for a prostitute, Sunny but after she arrives Holden has changed. He no longer wants to have any interaction with her besides talking. This shows his alienation as a form of self-protection.
Throughout NYC, there are many grafiti signs with the word "f***" on it. Holden puts the red hat onto Pheobe's head to protect her from these curse words.
"I felt so damn happy all of the sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around" (Salinger 233).
