Erikson's Stages: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
Children need to develop a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense of independence. Success leads to feelings of autonomy, failure results in feelings of shame and doubt. Little Lee started off eating his dinner all by himself, he gained the feeling of control, a sense of independence and feel secure and confident, he also got a taste of failure which made him doubt himself when he was taking a potty, he lost confidence, but did it because he believed he can do it since he got to do a lot more and accomplished more. 2-3 year old children needs to understand the feelings of autonomy, for them to gain confidence, and as they grow up, they still feel that confidence in them.
