  • We should oppose this act because it is going to upset the balance of slave states.

  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?

  • They opposed it because it upset the balance between free and slave states and  Abolitionist sentiments were growing the in the North
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • This helps preserve the balance in congress and its expands west.
  • They said that Congress had the power to prohibit slavery in new states because southerners believed the opposite

  • Yeah it should!
  • They thought that the South would control the Senate and legalize slavery in new states because northerners refused Missouri’s admittance into the US as a slave state.

  • If we get out numbered we wont be able to protect our land and interests.
  • They supported the compromise because it preserved balance in Congress and it Expands west and would be helpful for them.

  • Southerners believed that neither congress or any territorial government had the authority to ban slavery or regulate it in any way.

  • The south feared that if they became outnumbered in congressional representation that they would lack the power to protect their interests in property and trade and also if California was admitted as a free state so would new mexico and Utah.
