Storyboard Text

  • T - Title
  • P - Paraphrase
  • C - Connotation
  • The title, "sympathy" might imply that the narrator feels bad for someone.
  • A - Attitude/Tone
  • The story starts by the narrator telling us that he knows how the caged bird feels, then goes on to tell us why the bird beats its wing and why the bird sings.
  • S - Shift
  • Looking past the actual meaning, Dunbar has felt what the bird is feeling.
  • T - Title
  • The repeated saying of "I know what the caged bird feels" shows us that narrator has a feeling of intelligence and now understands.
  • The tone shifts from when the narrator says "And the faint perfume from its chalice steals" and it changes from a intelligent moment to the rest of the poem being creepy and sadistic.
  • After reading this poem my title perception was wrong because this poem is about a man realizing was the caged bird feels and not about a man feeling bad for someone.
