Before they could start their long walk they had to stay in camps. Illness broke out and as many as 2,000 Cherokee died.
The Trail of Tears was part of the Indian Removal Act. They tried to relocate 15,000 Cherokee.
Cherokees from North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee were relocated to the Indian Territory.
The bad weather and little to no food led 2,000 more deaths to occur.
About one quarter of the population of the Cherokee died at the end of the Trail of Tears.
