Bruno and his family live in a big house. Bruno has every thing he ever wants. One day the fury comes to tea. Then Bruno and his family are forced to move to a mystery place called Outwith.
Bruno moves to Outwith and is not happy he is bored and sad. Then one day Bruno discovers the fence. So he asks his sister and she does not know either. Bruno is puzzled.
Bruno thinks back to his trip to Outwith. He remembers that looking out the window of the train he was on he could see another train heading the same direction packed full of people. He is puzzled by this and he wonders if it will have anything to do with the fence that bruno and Gretal discovered. Bruno decides he will go and talk to his farther. Bruno tells his farther but he does not like it here but farther does not care.
Several weeks later Bruno make a swing. Pavel a waiter helps him find the tire TO make the swing. Eventually Bruno falls of the swing and gets a cut in his knee Pavel seals the cut and puts a bandage on it. Then mother comes home and takes credit for the bandaging. Bruno is interested in how Pavel was so good a bandaging he asks Maria and she tells him she was a doctor.
Bruno gets a tutor His name is Herr Liszt . Bruno is getting really bored of having to stay at the house so he decides to go explore the fence to find out more about the people with the striped pyjamas. Bruno walks for ages not finding anything and just as he is about to give up he sees a speck which becomes a dot which becomes a person. Bruno comes back every day at the same time and through talking bruno finds out that they are in Poland.
The story goes back in time to the night that the beautiful blonde hair women came to tea with the fury. Bruno's father was nervous and exited about the visit hoping it would mean big things for him. Then the story resumes at Bruno and Shmuel's first meeting. Shmuel's talks about how happy he used to be at his old house. Bruno is secretly jealous of the clothes Shmuel is wearing.
