The narrator of the story lives across from Lindy, the girl who he is hopelessly in love with He watched her run when she was on the track team and through her window. They rarely talked in person but would call each other after they ate dinner most nights during one summer. He fell in love with his idea of Lindy and it became all he thought about.
The narrators parents are divorced and now the father is dating a college student named Laura that was in the same grade as his oldest daughter who dies in a car accident. The mother becomes distraught through the book over her daughter dying and other horrible accidents but she was always a good mother.The father was never there and didn't seem to care.
While the narrator is falling in love with Lindy he changes a lot about himself to be similar to her. She quit the track team so he quit the soccer team, she listened to rock and wore black clothes he did to. This obsession with his idea of her made him forget to think about what he wants and who is. Later he grows up and is his own person and living with his fiance.
