Hey Kelly, you look worried! Is something wrong?
I’ve just been thinking about my kid growing up. I’m really worried about sending my son to college! It’s so expensive!
Wow, yea, college is expensive. Have you heard about the new college savings account that is being offered to all kids in Oakland?
No! What is that?
It’s called the Oakland Promise! The City of Oakland is giving every kindergartener a $100 savings account that they can use for college- it’s free! Maybe we can walk and talk about it.
That’s pretty neat. Why did Oakland decide to give money to every family?
Well, the mayor’s office believes that every kid deserves to live the life they choose, and part of being able to have choices is being able to choose the education they want. But, like you said, college is expensive. Oakland wants to helps families start saving when their kids are young, so by the time they graduate from high school they have money to pay for their education.
Also, studies show that students who have savings accounts are 3 times more likely to go to college, and 4 times more likely to graduate. Going to college also helps people earn more over the course of their lifetime.
Wow, that's exciting. But $100 isn’t enough to go to college.
