The villagers go to the meeting place for the lottery and talk amongst themselves. We are introduced to the village and its customs. Mr. Summers shows up and starts getting ready for the lottery.
The name picking starts. Tension starts to build because names are chosen and we don't know the outcome of the lottery.
The name picking ends and more tension rises. The villagers are nervous and wondering who has the card. They find out that Bill Hutchinson has the card.
Bill Hutchinson is chosen for the card. Tension is at its highest because we do not know what will happen to him. Tessie gets mad and screams that it is unfair, but people tell her that it wasn't and Bill tells her to shut up.
The Hutchinsons' start picking cards to see who will be chosen for the lottery. Tension starts to fall as they choose the cards. Tessie is chosen and we finally see what the "prize" for the lottery is.
Tessie is chosen for the lottery. The people of the village start to pick up rocks. Tessie is backed into an open field. The story ends when they throw them at Tessie and she screams that the lottery is unfair.
