Antagonist, The Devil
This scene shows Tom and his wife after they have yet another argument. Tom is a round and dynamic character. Tom's character is not physically described but he is said to be stuck in a state of misery when with his wife. He wants to get away from her and have a whole new life. "there lived near this place a meager, miserly fellow, of the name of Tom Walker."
The Devil is the main antagonist of the story. Old Scratch is a round and static character He was said to be wearing Indian garb, have a soot covered face, and messy black hair. People would say that The Devil would have shaken the nerves of all types of men. "Dressed in a rude Indian garb, and had a red belt or sash swathed round his body; but his face was neither black nor copper-color, but swarthy and dingy, and begrimed with soot,"
The conflict of the story is a external man vs. man issue between The Devil and Tom Walker. Tom regrets his decision to sell his soul later on in life and tries to become a religious man in attempts to save himself from damnation. "He thought with regret of the bargain he had made with his black friend, and set his wits to work to cheat him out of the conditions. He became, therefore, all of a sudden, a violent church-goer."
