  • Douglass was a former-slave and abolitionist activist. He wrote an autobiography that opened many people's eyes to the true horrors of slavery and was a big contribution to the anti-slavery movement.

  • John Brown was somebody who disliked slavery with a passion. He had a strong faith and went to extremes to literally fight for what he believed in. He raided many pro-slavery families and planned to arm slaves in a revolt in Virginia.
  • The abolitionist movement was powerful and successful. Many Southerners disagreed with anti-slavery Northerners during this time, but some could be swayed. This movement eventually led to the end of the cruel practice of slavery in America.
