Storyboard Text

  • One day in 1841, Dorothea was going to a jail to teach Sunday school. She was horrified when she saw how people where treated and wanted to make a change.
  • People shouldn't be treated like this. I have to do something.
  • Get moving or else
  • So Dorothea prepared two years and went to other jails so that she had enough information for the Massachusetts State Legislators.
  • To get the information Dorothea visited debtors prison or jails for people who owed money.
  • Please let me out, I only owe twenty dollars.
  • After Dorothea had gathered all the information and a report. she went to the State Legislators and told the horror she had seen. The lawmakers where so shocked with her report that they created public asylums for the mentally ill.
  • I agree I think we should make a public asylum for people with a mental illness
  • I proceed... to call your attention to the present state of insane persons, confined... in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, pens!, chained, naked, beaten with rods, and lashed into obedience.
  • Dorothea Dix help change how people where treated in Jail. She was able to get rid of some of the harsh and cruel punishments. She even was able to make sure that the mentally ill would be treated with respect and get the help they need. And Dorothea made sure that there was a special place for children to be punished.
  • Sergeant you need to stop, don't you know that's illegal
  • Get to your cell
  • What Dorothea Dix did changed how we live our lives today. People are now treated with care, Misbehaved children have there own facility, and people are no longer beaten with rods or whips.
  • I am proud to know that I changed how people where treated in Jails.
