Set in the 1920's, Sanger Rainsford is aboard a ship to Rio, but hears gunshots in the distant. Startling him, his pipe fell out of his mouth, in an effort to grab the pipe, he leaned to far, and fell out of the ship. Everyone on board didn't hear his yell for help.
Rainsford remembered the gunshots once again, and gunshots meant that there was land nearby. He swam the direction of the gunshots, and ended up at an island, filled with trees. Seeing footprints, he followed them to a building.
Rainsford sees lights up ahead, and approaches the building. A man named General Zaroff welcomes him, supplying food, clothing, and sleep. They talk, and Rainsford learns that General likes to hunt, but he hunts humans. Rainsford asks to leave the place at ounce, but General doesn't let him until they hunt, but Rainsford is the hunted, and General is the hunter.
The next night, the hunt began. General gave Rainsford a three hour head start. Rainsford wore moccasins to cover his trail better. He first used many tricks to try to trick General, but General has done this many times before, so Rainsford had to come up with new ideas.
Rainsford used tactics that he learned from some other experiences. He made a secret trapped pit, which captured one on General's best dogs. Then he tied a knife to a bendable tree, and killed Ivan, the giant. He had not yet killed General, so he jumped and swam to the sea.
Rainsford swam across the sea, and arrived at the general home before he did himself. He snuck into the General's closet and waited until he arrived. Once he arrived, he came out, startling General. General congratulated him, but Rainsford duled him once more, winning the hunt.
