Buno is a young boy who’s father happens to be a commendants for the Nazis. Bruno lives in Berlin and he loves it there. He can explore, see his grandparent when ever he wants to, and slide down the banister. When the family moves it ruins everything for Bruno. When he goes exploring in poland he runs into a small boy named Shmuel. They become friends and visit each other every day the thing that’s wrong is that they have fence between them.

Gretel is Bruno’s big sister. She is just your average sister, telling Bruno what to do, calling him names, trying to be better than him. Gretel is called a hopeless case by bruno because she is mean to Bruno. Gretel can’t believe her eyes when she sees the camp outside of Bruno’s room. She is about 13 years old and is in love with her Father’s lieutenant, Kotler. She tries to flirt with him but Bruno always ruins the moment.

Shmuel is the little boy on the other side of the fence that Bruno meets. Shmuel is a tiny grey boy that wears the same striped pajamas everyday. Bruno has lots of questions about him and why there is a fence. Shmuel is very smart and aware of everything unlike Bruno who is completely unaware of everything.

Father is a big deal in Nazi Germany. The Fury which we all think is Hitler has come over for dinner a few times and has told him him and his family need to move to poland. They move because that's like having the president tell you to do something… Your going to do it. So when they move to Poland Father is out of the house or his office a lot. He is determined to fulfill the Fury’s needs.

Pavel is a server for the family for a little while. He was washing dishes one day saw Bruno fall off of the tire swing he had built. He went to help Bruno and wrapped his wounds. He told Bruno he was a doctor but he was forced to work as waiter for the family. When Mother had seen that Pavel helped Bruno she said she would tell Father she helped him. This means he’s a Jew.
