Jonas gets the first memory that he receives from the giver. The memory is of sliding down a snowy hill on a sled. "Comprehending all of those things as he sped downwards, he was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him" page 108.
What is Love?
Jonas sees his friend Fiona's hair change but he does not know what it is or how to explain it. "Jonas stood for a moment beside his bike, startled. It had happened again: the thing that he thought of now as seeing beyond" page 118.
The Joy of Ignorance
Jonas is given a memory by the Giver of Christmas time with a traditional family. "Sometimes it took a while for him to get his bearings, to find his place. But this time he fitted right in and felt the happiness that pervaded the memory" page 157.
The Release of Death
Jonas asks his parents if they love him but they laugh and say that love is a bad word to use. "There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle" page 162.
Jonas has a memory of real war while the kids of the community are playing a game of fake war. "Jonas sighed. It was no use. Of course Asher couldn't understand" page 171.
The Giver shows Jonas the recording of his father releasing a baby. Jonas learns that the process of release means that you get killed. "He killed it! My Father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realising" page 188.
