  • He lost his wife and he is sitting in his library mourning and he is going through depression and a raven flies in and sits on the post above the door of what he calls his chamber. He starts to get angry and yell at the raven and ask it if he will ever see his wife again and to every question he asks, the raven answers "Nevermore".
  • Shift:
  • He is grieving and going through depression. He called his library his chamber and he heard a tapping noise and he opened the window and whispered his deceased wife's name. He thought her ghost came back.
  • Theme:
  • He is dreary, weak, and bleak. It is mournful and dreadful. He even called the room he was in, which was his library, his chamber.
  • Yes, the mood does change in the poem. He is depressed and then he becomes angry and starts yelling at the raven.
  • The lesson in this poem is death will lead you to depression and mourning and the death of a loved one will lead you to start hearing their voice once again and wishing that they are still with you, but they will always be there with you and always be in your heart.
