At the age of 4 Ruby's parents Abon and Lucille Bridges decide to move to New Orl eans for a better life. Her dad worked as a gas station attendent and her mom took night jobs to support her family. after moving to New Orleans Ruby became a big sister to two brothers and one sister

When Ruby was in kindergarten she was chosen to take a test determining whether or not she could attend a white school. she was one of only six African American students to pass the test. Ruby was the only African American student to attend the William Frantz School, and the first black child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South.

In the 1960s individuals down south were going through the begining stages of intergration in all-white schools. Ruby stood up against segregation in schools by being the first Arican American to intergrate an all-white school in the souths
What spawned Ruby's actions was her mom. Her mom wanted her to get a better education then what she had growing up and the school was also closer to their house.
