Why did Thebes revolt?
Alexander is dead, I saw it.
The Persion King, Darius, had sent gold to the Greek city-states with hope that they would rise against their new Hegemon, in turn disrupting Alexanders invasion of Persia.
Because Alexander had been busy with the Siege of Pelium news of him had not reached southern Greece for a long time. A rumour reached thebes that Alex had died. Demosthene, an athenian politition, produced a fake witness who could confirm alexanders death.
The Thebans declared revolt by killing two Macedonian officers who had been roaming the city, this was an act of war. It was also the start of the revolt.
