Storyboard Text

  • Today we are going to learn about patterns!
  • There are 4 different ways to show a pattern.
  • 1. models 2. table of values 3. graph 4.expression
  • One way is to draw the shapes.
  • The term number is the figure number and the term value is how many are in the figure.
  • You can also make a t-chart of term numbers and term values
  • 1 2 3 4
  • 2 3 4 5
  •   The constant is the part of the pattern that stays the same. The variable is what the pattern is changing by. Always attach a letter to the variable.  To find the term value, multiply the variable by the term number and either add or subtract the constant, depending on if the number is positive or negative.
  • Making a t-chart is one of the easiest ways to find the expression
  • EXPRESSION=   variable     + OR - constant eg. 2n+3
  • On a graph, the x axis is the term number and the y axis is the term value. Where the line meets the y axis is "ground zero"/the constant.
  • And the final way to show a pattern is by using a graph!
  • 5 4 3 2 1
  • 1   2   3   4
  • y
  • x
