  • Ohhh, what will I ever do to save myself? Why I can be punished at any time! Oh so much fear! Oh what to do! WHAT TO DO!!
  • After being nearly struck by lightning, Martin Luther vowed to be a monk out of fear for his life. He tried to follow the Church, but was afraid an angry God would punish him.
  • Luther's idea that people could be saved if they had faith in Christ led to problems with the Catholic Church.
  • We will go against Luther and win the Church's power back!
  • The conflicts began in Wittenberg, Germany. This is when church officials were selling indulgences to finance St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.
  • Luther posted all his disputes with the Church in his Ninety-Five Theses. These included the Bible is not the only source of religious truth: people don't need the clergy to interpret the Bible: Salvation can be gained only through faith in Christ.
  • In 1529, German Princes who stayed loyal to the Church agreed to unite against Luther and his ideas. This was the Reformation.
  • The princes who supported Luther signed a protest against the agreement and earned the Protestants for them.
