Have some land for your poor family!
How will we eat?
The Homestead Act gave people who met certain requirements a plot of land, applicants must be over 21, head of a household, and never borne arms against the US.
The land given had to be used for farming and ranching.
It's going to be okay..
However, the harsh climate, lack of experience, and bad farming plots were all contributions to families going broke or abandoning the land.
The Dawes Act allowed the President to, if he deemed that the land was fit for agriculture and ranching, could relocate the Native Americans living there to reservations.
A fresh start in the west!
Why do WE have to leave?
Native American that met certain requirements could receive a plot of land in a reservation, but it caused tribes to be split up. Some were forced to assimilate into western culture.
The surplus of land was sold off to white families for farming and ranching.
